Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Review

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Review

I have officially watched the full episode of Sailor Moon Crystal. I must say that I was giddy with happiness here. Overall, I would say that it was perfect.

It actually saddened me to see that so many people were upset with the show. They felt upset because:

The Art - the art has a very clean look. A lot of people were upset that it was not in the same style that it was originally. Though, this is a modern age. Of course the art would be updated. I was 100% expecting that. I also liked that they used the original manga art as inspiration. The elongated limbs do look a little odd since you don't see it that much in anime anymore, but I really don't think it takes away anything from the anime. In fact, I think that alone should make it stand out more so than other current girly anime.

The Music - some people were bothered by the background music. I myself had no issue with the music. I thought it was pretty (current) normal-sounding. I mean, if anyone had to suffer through the American dub music, I really think this music should be an improvement. I thought it was an improvement since that is what I am used to hearing.

The Voice-Acting - a lot of Americans hated the voice actress for Sailor Moon. They always felt that the original acting was terrible. I, on the other hand, think it was spot on. Sailor Moon is a whiny 14 year old brat, so why wouldn't her voice sound like one?

Tuxedo Mask's/Mamoru Entrance - a lot of people were concerned that there was no secrecy in who Tuxedo Mask could be since we see Mamoru in a tux in the very first scene he is shown. I, on the other hand, have read the manga. I remember that is how he was originally portrayed, so I didn't mind that. I also very much liked that he didn't come across as really mean to Usagi. That was a mega improvement. I think almost everyone will agree with me here. But I think another major concern that people had was the fact that you know instantly that they have this connection. The whole series opens with Usagi having a dream of her former self. A lot of people didn't like that it so easily threw the two of them together. But in my opinion, I liked it even better! I really liked that there was instantly a connection between the two. In the original American-dubbed, it really seemed like Usagi and Mamoru really shouldn't have ever been a couple to begin with. They didn't seem to stand each other and had nothing in common. So I appreciate the link between their past selves since it gives a little more credit to their love. Also, of course, as previously mentioned, the idea that Mamoru isn't as much of a penis-head also adds more realism to them falling for each other eventually.

Preview of Ami - At the end of the episode, we see a short haired girl that everyone assumes is Ami because, well, there's only a 250% chance that it is her. A lot of people hated that because it is pretty similar to current anime and how everything is foreshadowed. I didn't really mind this aspect. I mean, the opening theme song has everyone, so you know their gonna meet eventually. And everyone that watched this show before knows it's going to happen, so I didn't really understand the fuss over this. In fact, I liked it because it shows that she has always been there and didn't just randomly show up a the right time on the right episode. It makes it seem less like she doesn't matter.

The Game - I liked that the gaming store was still there. Some people thought it wasn't realistic to have a gaming store in the anime because they aren't that popular anymore. But, I find that it sticks to the manga better. I also don't find it completely unrealistic because I have two gaming places that I like to go to on occasion. So I really feel that this is a super personal preference and really shouldn't be a deal breaker for a show. Shrugs. Maybe that's just me.

I really enjoyed the clean art style. I thought it was beautiful. I feel like the artists and workers of this show took it very seriously, everything seems so perfectly made. I didn't think the CG art was weird at all. I was expecting it to have that. The opening and closing's were better than the original, in my opinion. And I'm happy to see that there isn't a 'Sailor Says' at the end of the episodes. I give it a 100% GO.
